SEO for small businesses in austin

SEO No Comments

So doing the normal search engine optimization here in austin I was able to get another small business into first page on  one of the targeted  keywords. The keywords they wanted to rank for went from no where or 100 something in position to twenties and tens aka first and second and third pages.  Right now I am working on getting this specific business to show up more on google maps, I got them showing on first page on one of the main keywords on google map but I want the other targeted ones to start showing there too. Needless to say they are showing up more on less competitive keywords all over the place both on maps and normal search engine queries. By the end of the month, I plan to have atleast another of the competitive keywords on the first page.

It’s amazing how long it takes to get the site ranking but the potential business from being first page is what gives many of us patience. When SEO goes wrong or  done with haste a website can be penalized and banned from major search engines. And that is not good for anyone or business in general. Which is why when trying to get someone to do SEO for your site you should probably check for some past work.

Fixing Blackberry Curve 8530 App Error 523

random No Comments

I just got back from Albuquerque when a friend called me up that his phone was messed up more specifically a blackberry curve 8530, was showing up app error 523 on the sprint network/carrier. I’ve only played with iphones  jailbreaking unlocking and all sorts of stuff, just recently opened one up and saw the actual inside of one but thats a different story.

This is for : blackberry curve 8530, carrier sprint and computer os used is  windows more specific windows 7

After looking up for solutions I found out that we just needed to reload the OS.

Reloading the OS ( read atleast twice  so you dont waste time)

All you do to fix this error is go to the carriers website and download the Operating system for the phone.

This is the website to go and download the os  https://www.blackberry.com/Downloads/entry.do?code=FC3CF452D3DA8402BEBB765225CE8C0E

Install the software downloaded, and go here C:\Program Files\Common Files\Research In Motion\AppLoader

To start make sure your blackberry is NOT connected, and also take off the battery.

click on the Apploader

the app loader wizard will come up

click next connect blackberry immediately

connection will go from comm to USB-PIN:UNKNOWN

Immediately click next this will stop your blackberry from the constant reboot/restart phase.

Now reconnect your battery to blackberry because it will reload but stop connecting to the computer, if not connected you will get an error and will have to do everything again so make sure you follow this instructions read atleast twice.

If done correctly this is what you will see , blackberry reinstalling the software itself.

Website Not Displaying Properly on IE 7

General CSS + HTML No Comments

The moral of this story watch out for quotation marks when transferring your css code from html to external style sheet. I checked my  recently made website template  for cross browser compatibility and everything was fine. So I made an external style sheet and then starting making the web pages that I needed. And felt like everything was fine, and that’s what i thought for a week, until today. Just out of curiosity I checked for browser compatibility however when I viewed the website on Internet Explorer 7 I was extremely surprised, at the mess the web site looked like. I was actually embarrassed, I’ve coded many websites and a mistake like this are hard to make. Not only was the website not properly displaying but also my blog.

Once I noticed something was wrong, I quickly set out to fix it. I edited the CSS file and nothing would change, on the website itself. I was getting frustrated thinking, that the css file was not properly connected to the html file. So I decided to check for errors, and and could find nothing, I made sure that the css and html files were properly connected.  .And knew that somehow internet explorer 8 and all the other browsers, ignored an error,  that IE 7 didn’t.

Since the html, file seemed error free and w3 validator told me so, I moved on to the CSS validator. And found that I had a closing quotation mark, that I left from transferring css from html to my CSS  style sheet. Once the closing quotation marks were taken out, the site displayed exactly as i wanted it to display. Having an external style sheet can and does save a lot of hours when modifying a website, but we need to be careful to check that there are no errors, when you transfer code from one source to another.

Undordered List Not Showing Disc/bullets on IE7

General CSS + HTML No Comments

I just finished coding for a website, that I had to  make IE7 compatible, everything went smooth because I  knew the normal procedure. However, we had a section that had a list of objects listed in unordered lists. When I viewed it on IE7 I noticed that the bullets to the left did not show up.

I tried changing the margin, padding, and even width of the list, thinking that they were being eaten up by lack of space or negative margins and padding’s. But after going through the  margin, width and padding, the bullets or discs would still not show up. Then I decided to look it up on the search engines, as we know almost any question that we  may have is easily answered there.

So after browsing page after page, I came up with the solution. If you are making a  website ie7 compatible and working with lists and you need the bullets/discs to the left to show up you need to put this in the ul section “list-style: disc inside;” that should solve the problem of bullets not showing  up.

Database Transferred But Its Not Being Read

Databases 3 Comments

So I was working with a database driven website, I transferred correctly from the server to work on it on my computer, and I knew it was correct because I checked the mySQL files on both the server and local installation and they looked exactly  the same at first. The problem I had was that, when I installed the CMS system in my computer to work on it, the CMS would work as a fresh install. But the files that I transferred such as web pages and work were not being read. I  reinstalled it many times thinking It was a problem with local files, and even reinstalled my local server.

But the real problem was in the mySQL files, the local installation was reading the mySQL but not the tables I wanted it to read. It was reading table fields from the fresh  mySQL installation those table fields had no prefix, the ones I transferred had a prefix on them so they were  just being ignored. After a few days of frustration, I opened the mySQL file both files side by side went line by line and with a little luck and help I noticed the difference. I just erased the table fields from the fresh install and replaced it with the modified table fields I wanted to use, modified as in the prefix erased. Thats how I solved a database transfer  problem, I am sure there are better ways of doing it but for now I know of one thing to look out for when transferring databases.

Dealing With Bom Byte Order Removing it

General CSS + HTML 1 Comment

I recently updated my website and was able to remove these silly characters from displaying on some of my pages.I read online and nothing helped, they suggested to use notepad++ which is what I’ve always used. And it never worked, until I found another program to use.

If you want to remove bom byte order from displaying on some of your pages USE less than slash editor. I was able to clearly see the bom characters and all I did was just highlight them and remove them. And they were gone, in less than a fraction of a second. What took me a month to figure out was resolved in a matter of seconds. here is a link where you can find the software to end the your bom problem http://www.pricelesswarehome.org/acf/P_WEBDESIGN.php

On another note, I am about to finish a new website this one is for a tree service company here in austin. We’ll see final product probably next week.

later readers hope this helped anyone.

Website Not Showing on Search Engines

SEO 3 Comments

So I just finished a website for a local architect.I learned a lot from redesigning and redeveloping this website.

When people say update website I used to think it was B.S. but after going through the code on this particular site, I saw alot of errors. They might not have been errors when it was made but, they were now. These errors and mistakes may be no big deal to the site visually and will still look ok even with the newer web browsers but it does affect you in other areas you might not have thought about.

The website was up for about two years and it never showed up on search engines. The reason to this was that the site was using frames for a sideshow. As we all know one way to make sure your site doesn’t show up on search engines is to use frames. Each image was actually a web page itself, this was not only hindering the site on search engines but also making a site look way bigger than it actually was. The site with as it was set up with the frames and alot of extra unnecessary material was 25.9 MB, which is pretty big for a website with no multimedia. When I finished recoding it, the size went down to 10.5 MB and that was with about 8 webpages added to it, and one of them with alot of images. That is a big difference, the site now is lighter and loads faster.

Not only was the site using frames, there was basically no description to anything. So someone could see the website visually but if you looked at the code you could never tell what the website was about. The site was also made a few years back, so I had to recode it from scratch and make it validate with W3 validator. The site is now properly described and I am not doing any offsite SEO on it, so I think it should start ranking in a few months.

In all navigation was redeveloped, look was redesigned, and added a few extra functionalities. Clients were happy, its all good. As they way clients are always right.
