My website finally got a google rank

SEO 4 Comments

Due to being extremely busy with life work and school i missed when my site got a google ranking of one. I am really pleased, what would take years to occur naturally took me some months with some SEO.

if you want to check your page rank i suggest you google search “whats my page rank”   go to one of the first few pages i suggest the first one, and insert your url, if you want to check mine just insert hectoronline.info and it should show you rank of 1 unless i get demoted
: ). Got to get back to projects

will soon show solutions to problems involving transferring databases

Dealing With Bom Byte Order Removing it

General CSS + HTML 1 Comment

I recently updated my website and was able to remove these silly characters from displaying on some of my pages.I read online and nothing helped, they suggested to use notepad++ which is what I’ve always used. And it never worked, until I found another program to use.

If you want to remove bom byte order from displaying on some of your pages USE less than slash editor. I was able to clearly see the bom characters and all I did was just highlight them and remove them. And they were gone, in less than a fraction of a second. What took me a month to figure out was resolved in a matter of seconds. here is a link where you can find the software to end the your bom problem http://www.pricelesswarehome.org/acf/P_WEBDESIGN.php

On another note, I am about to finish a new website this one is for a tree service company here in austin. We’ll see final product probably next week.

later readers hope this helped anyone.

Website Not Showing on Search Engines

SEO 7 Comments

So I just finished a website for a local architect.I learned a lot from redesigning and redeveloping this website.

When people say update website I used to think it was B.S. but after going through the code on this particular site, I saw alot of errors. They might not have been errors when it was made but, they were now. These errors and mistakes may be no big deal to the site visually and will still look ok even with the newer web browsers but it does affect you in other areas you might not have thought about.

The website was up for about two years and it never showed up on search engines. The reason to this was that the site was using frames for a sideshow. As we all know one way to make sure your site doesn’t show up on search engines is to use frames. Each image was actually a web page itself, this was not only hindering the site on search engines but also making a site look way bigger than it actually was. The site with as it was set up with the frames and alot of extra unnecessary material was 25.9 MB, which is pretty big for a website with no multimedia. When I finished recoding it, the size went down to 10.5 MB and that was with about 8 webpages added to it, and one of them with alot of images. That is a big difference, the site now is lighter and loads faster.

Not only was the site using frames, there was basically no description to anything. So someone could see the website visually but if you looked at the code you could never tell what the website was about. The site was also made a few years back, so I had to recode it from scratch and make it validate with W3 validator. The site is now properly described and I am not doing any offsite SEO on it, so I think it should start ranking in a few months.

In all navigation was redeveloped, look was redesigned, and added a few extra functionalities. Clients were happy, its all good. As they way clients are always right.

If IE statement not working

General CSS + HTML 2 Comments

So I was working on a website that dealt with a lot of CSS. As we know CSS  is not well implemented on Internet Explorer. So I had to make a new style-sheet that was specifically for IE,  to be precise IE7. So I was using this

<!–[if IE 7]>
<link href=”xxxie7.css” rel=”stylesheet” type=”text/css” />
<![endif]–>

I tried it on IE 7 multiple times, using various programs and it would never be picked up.
However when I deleted the comment code and erased my regular CSS
it would show up. I though there was something wrong in my coding, checked for errors and none.
So after a few days of desperation, and looking up online. I found
somewhere I forgot the source its been a while, that the statement should go AFTER your regular
css link. Like this

<link href=”xxx.css” rel=”stylesheet” type=”text/css” />

<!–[if IE 7]>
<link href=”xxxie7.css” rel=”stylesheet” type=”text/css” />
<![endif]–>

Little things like that can keep some sites from being launched in time. Hope this information helps someone.
